When you first bring one of our puppies home it is wise to just keep him or her on the same dog food that we use for that particular puppy.We take great care in what they are eating and if they thrive on it or not. Chihuahuas are very small so take great care in what they put in thier mouth. If you have your own type dog food that you swear by and want to switch them over to it please change gradually. Switching thier food may cause you more problems than you think. Chihuahua's are very tiny and it does not take much to make them sick, really sick so one should always inquire with thier vet before making any big fast changes.
Here at Purcell Mountain Chihuahua's we agree with the vets in that human food is also a no no . If you want to have many many years with your new puppy do her or him a favour and skip the human food it is the best thing you can do for them. Plus they wont sit by your feet begging to eat when the family is eating a meal for they do not know the taste of what your are eating. They are quite fine with thier choice of puppy food and small snacks made for Chihuahuas. Doing this will also help them to keep thier teeth healthy. Little dogs of all breeds seem to have problems with thier teeth as they age and we here at Purcell Mountain Chihuahua's think it is best to take proper care of thier teeth from early on.. Simply giving them a detal stick for small breeds is a terrific way to do this and they will think they are special when you incorporate this into thier diet once a day.Another good product we have been using is the new nylo bone it is great for cleaning thier teeth and it keeps them from chewing on more dangerous things like electical cords. Chihuahua's love cords of all kinds so please take the time to puppy proof your home on this issue. It only takes a minute of prevention for a whole lot of life.

Chocolate is toxic to dogs. The worst a Hershey bar can do to you is add an inch to your hips. But that same candy – even in relatively small amounts – can make a dog or cat very sick. Make no mistake: For them, chocolate is poison
Our puppies are fiercly loyal and tend to pick out one person in the family that is only thiers. They do not like to share so if you plan to have your new chihuahua around other pets introduce them early on and always supervised for the first while.When they feel comfortable and safe they will flourish under you and your family's love.
Please never leave them alone with your baby or toddlers as your chihuahua is smaller than your baby / toddlers and will feel in danger if just thrown together Scared is not what you want either your child or your new puppy to feel. You are thier protector and it is you they will stick to like glue.
